Hi Ian, not much of a "nightclub" person which is why I maybe like Perth so much. ;)
But, how about some of our outdoor concerts/movies. I just went to the Joondalup Pines movies last weekend. Get some takeaway dinner from the nearby restaurants in Joondalup, stake out your spot with a couple of cushions in the theatre, then have a picnic dinner out on the lawns, glass of wine (Margaret River if you have it!). Once the movie is about to start, settle into your cushions with more wine, cheese platter and watch the movie under the stars.
Same deal with lots of concerts in Kings Park over summer. I think the zoo does a few of these as well (they used to, not sure about this year).
As far as Margaret River goes, lovely but sadly overpriced (and mostly over-rated...as much as I love it). If you are into wine and food, try Pemberton, Denmark and even the Swan Valley (right on Perth's doorstep). (Still quite a few little gems in Margaret river to find though)
If you are going to be here permanently, I would suggest getting involved in our many sporting clubs.
I don't know much about the north of our state, but I know it is huge. Incredible unspoiled views and landscapes If you can afford it I hear cruises along the north coast are wonderful.
Best of luck!
